To war, or not to war? – that is the question we live by everyday. And the only way we can escape this political limbo is by clinging to a higher power. Haven’t we yet mastered that art of redemption?
October 07, 2010: The Pilgrimage
“There is Hope,” she murmurs. “Yes, there is Hope.” All the “Hopes” in the room are placed on her.
They came from all parts of the world - devoid of all sorts of political or spiritual commitment- to hear this new revelation. Their only pledge is to Fairouz. In times of war, they would cling to her for solitude, for escape, and for reason. SHE is their person.
There is something about Fairouz that you can’t put your finger on no matter how hard you try. Something unearthly, but yet so down-to-earth!
You watch her “float” into the stage - a territory she has claimed as far as you can remember. The whites of your eyes come through in disbelief, as if you have seen a deity, a Holy Ghost. When she sings, she detaches herself from her very being and reaches up for a higher cloud. Somewhere heavenly, where the body and soul meet up in ecstasy. It is a place where her velvety voice blends in with the instruments in perfect harmony they almost breathe together. A place where words flow smoothly and on their own. And if you are lucky, she might take you with her!
As eerie as this epiphany sounds, you find comfort in a voice that you just recognize. A voice that conjures up many images locked up at the back of your subconscience. A voice that has been there with you since you were born. The very first moments a plane lands on these grounds, the break of dawn in between the mountains, the early show on the radio…it is there with you.
This is how she communicates her thoughts to her audience. This is the only way she knows how to interact. She skims through an infinite repertoire of songs, filled with political and social connotations. Decipher them your own way. Because, she knows, the war you are waiting for comes from the war raging inside of you*.
The ball is in your court.
PLAY IT BY FEAR*,
for you cannot take anything for granted.
And before you know it,
game might be over.
