GET YOUR COPIES:
What was the first female item you ever wore, and how old were you?
Oh god! Everything! I would play dress up in everyyyyyything when I was a kid!
Who or what was your inspiration when creating your drag persona?
I was inspired by a ton of things. Fashion, my sister, my friend Diane, Peaches, Jackie Beat, Mizz Cori. I wanted to be a tranny robot.
What is a drag queen’s biggest asset?
Being fucking genuine. A good heart and sense of humor go a lot farther than an entitled ego.
What are you like when you’re not in drag?
Exactly. The. Same.
How does your male persona feel about your drag persona grabbing all the attention?
Honestly, I never think about it. Detox is such an extension of who Matthew is. We are the same. Plus I’m pretty recognizable out of drag too, haha.
Drag Queens are the best at being offensive, but never hurtful. What’s your trick?
I think it’s just easier to get away with things when you’re 8 feet tall and have 20lbs of makeup on.
If there was one Drag Queen stereotype that you would like to eliminate, which one would it be and why?
That we’re all cunts…but, unfortunately, a lot of us are.
Do you consider yourself a Dragtivist?
I consider every queen a Dragtivist…just doing drag is a form of activism…some of us choose to take that further than others, obviously, but it’s still something!
In your opinion, is drag still considered a ‘gay thing’? Why/not?
It will always be a gay thing. It’s who we are! I love that it’s becoming a much broader ideal though.
Gender roles are slowly but surely becoming obsolete. How does this affect drag culture?
I don’t think it does. I think drag has always been a celebration of gender fluidity and I feel that’s why everyone loves it so much.
What’s your take on “Faux-Queens” or “Bio-Queens”?
Love. I love all forms of drag. Some of the faux-queens out there are insanely talented. I feel like it’s their way of showing appreciation…it’s awesome.
RuPaul once stated that drag will never be mainstream. RuPaul now holds an Emmy for Outstanding host for a Reality program. What’s your take on it?
I definitely feel differently. I feel like his Emmy win is just proof that Drag is becoming more and more mainstream, and that’s largely, if not solely, due to the success of Drag Race.
Out of all the drag queens seen in RuPaul’s Drag Race, who would you choose as your ride-or-die?
OMG there are so many…I love all of them so much and have worked so closely with them all. Roxxxy and I have been friends for 13 years…we’ll always have each other’s backs. But Bianca and I have been known to empty bars of their liquor reserves!
If you were to cast the next season of RuPaul’s All Stars, who would you cast?
Oh, god. That’s tough, but here’s a list of people I find, not only entertaining, but incredible: Delta Work, Ongina, Phoenix, Milk, Raven, BenDeLaCreme, Laila McQueen, Chi Chi DeVayne, and many more…
Is there any season, besides yours, that you would have loved to be a part of? If so, which one and why?
Season 3 JUST to kiki with Raja and Delta. OMG, so fun!
If you were to come up with a challenge for RuPaul’s Drag Race, what would it be?
Something that actually involved drag.
