Chanel launched her new perfume on the 5th day of the 5th month of 1921 in keeping with the superstition that 5 is her lucky number.
Unlike other perfumes of its time, Chanel No.5 was the only non mono-floral scent. It is the first perfume that blends special special synthetic molecules called "aldehydes" with natural ingredients like May rose, ylang-ylang, and jasmine. This unique combination made it the costliest perfume ever produced.
The first Chanel No.5 was captured in a simple rectangular bottle with the top resembling Place Vendome in Paris.
Every 55 minutes a bottle is sold somewhere around the world. It is dubbed "Le Monster" because of the nearly 90 years, it remains on top of the world's best-selling perfume charts.
